What is a mammogram, exactly? 

An x-ray scan of the chest is called a mammogram. Mammograms are used by doctors to check for early signs of breast cancer. Screening mammograms and diagnostic mammograms are the two types of mammograms. 

What is a mammogram screening? 

A screening mammography is one that is performed on women who have no symptoms or indicators of breast cancer. Breast cancer deaths for women aged 40 to 74 can be reduced with regular mammography screening. This is because they can detect breast cancer early, allow therapy to begin before it spreads. 

However, screening mammograms are not without risk. They may find something that appears abnormal but it is not cancer. This leads to additional testing, which can be stressful. Mammograms sometimes can overlook cancer when it is present. You are also exposed to radiation. You should discuss the advantages and disadvantages of mammograms with your clinician. You and your doctor can determine when to begin and how frequently to get mammograms. 

Little is known regarding the risk of breast cancer in transgender people. Talk to your provider about your risk and whether you need screening mammograms if you are transgender. 

What exactly is a diagnostic mammogram? 

People who have a lump or other signs or symptoms of breast cancer are given a diagnostic mammography. Breast soreness, thickening of the breast skin, nipple discharge, or a change in breast size or shape are all symptoms. However, same symptoms can also be caused by a benign breast ailment (not cancer). A mammography, along with other testing, can assist your doctor in determining whether you have cancer. 

How is a mammogram performed? 

You stand in front of an X-Ray Machine for a mammography. The x-ray technician sandwiches your breast between two plastic plates. The plates press against your breast, flattening it.
